“Petri Dish Doodle Workshop- Microculture animals & organisms”

Tuesday 20th July 2021 1pm-3pm

2 hour workshop with a 10/15 minute break/ online

Create a fun, fascinating and mysterious microculture doodle world. They shape the way we live, digest, feel & think. Learn how to draw these ancient tiny animals & organisms with style, character and panache!

The workshop will cover learning to doodle draw the following:

1. Tardigrad, water bear or moss piglet- These strangely cute creatures are extremophiles and look similar to the hookah- smoking caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. They are virtually indestructible and can survive in space.

2. E.Coli Gut Bacteria - A good bacteria with a bad rap. While some strains can cause food poisoning, others play a critical role in regulating uncontrolled growth of harmful bacteria and producing a compound that helps cells take up iron. Between 300 to 500 different species of bacteria live in the digestive tract.

3. Algae/Phytoplankton- 50 % of all oxygen in the atmosphere is produced by microalgae. There are about 5,000 known marine species and some of them are incredibly surreal, other worldly and beautiful. A key part of ocean and freshwater ecosystems, they obtain energy through photosynthesis & light from the sun and live in the well-lit surface layers of oceans.

4. Archaea love extreme environmental conditions.

5. Fungi/ Penicilliu; Brewers Yeast - We wouldn’t have wine, cakes , beer or antibiotics without these incredible fungi! Although controversial antibiotics are the most important discoveries of medical science and have been used to save millions of peoples lives.

6. Protozoa - These animal-like dudes love moisture. Some believe in free living, while others are parasitic.

7. Viruses are in the global spotlight once again and have acquired an infamous reputation! Approx 380 trillion viruses live on and inside our bodies —10 times the number of bacteria.
