Though largely self-taught, his foundation in observational skills and draftsmanship was nurtured by his late mother, herself an accomplished artist.
His artistic focus centers on the British coastline, drawing inspiration from the escapist quality of seaside vistas and far-reaching skies. Payne's unique approach to "imagined realism" seeks to capture the ideal essence of each scene he portrays.
