Aida, cotton thread

“Labour” aims to create a tension between itself and the viewer by having the finished embroidered artwork hidden in the fold of the fabric. All you can see are knots, and over laying threads. You can see the time and effort that went into the work, but not the work itself.

It is undeniable that embroidery is interwoven with cliché stereotypes of femininity, and is often seen as a characteristic of femininity, due to our patriarchal society and femininity being viewed as ‘less than’ all things, masculine embroidery is labelled as craft. The division of art forms into hierarchical classification of arts and crafts is usually due to aspects of gender and class. The artwork allows you to see what you often don’t in embroidered works, and that’s the time and skill it took to create, you can see where the thread first penetrates the fabric, and it eventually runs out over and over again. It often takes longer to embroider work than it does to paint one, yet is belittled as craft and one is elevated as art.

  • About The Artist

Millicent is an Essex based artist whose creative practice explores themes of physical and emotional vulnerability and keeps in mind ideas of femininity and the nation of the female gaze. She uses ceramics, textiles, and embroidery to expose emotions and thoughts to the viewer. She is interested in the relationship between embroidery and the perception society has with these types of traditionality defined feminine domestic- crafts. By using embroidery as well as other traditional craft techniques, she hopes to raise awareness of the potential the media has in contemporary fine art practice.

  • Caring For Your Artworks

Avoid hanging your artwork or displaying your sculpture in direct sunlight, above a working fireplace, or in a damp or humid area.

When cleaning, never use water or commercial cleaners - always use your high-quality, lint-free microfiber cloth dry, and handle the artwork with extreme care to avoid creating fingerprints, dents or creases. This is especially important for artworks without glazed fronts.

Lighting which washes the walls of a room displays all paintings without damaging them with ultraviolet rays or direct heat from sunlight. Energy-saving bulbs or yellow light bulbs don't capture artworks to their full beauty.

Sculpture should always be lit from eye level or above, never from below as while this may create momentary drama it will not do the work justice.
