A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts, and his feelings as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of consciousness.
Albert Einstein.The twentieth century brought the production of plastics, a material designed by man for the convenience of man. An everyday and predominately an only-used once commodity, yet it transcends the parameters of known time; as it will take trillions of years to break down naturally and enfold into another substance.
Agreeing with Albert Einstein and drawing upon Gilles Deleuze’s theory of the Fold, where everything breaks down to monad particles, to flow and enfold between matter, time, space and thought; it surpasses the Empiricism concept that all human knowledge is based on personal experience derived from the senses and distinct from the universe and beyond.
Using repetitive processes, Lorrain’s practice is one of enfoldment. Fragile, seemingly ephemeral, inconsequential and often using transparent plastic substances, her sculptures and drawings are made from every day, single use materials, achieved through a labour-intensive craft process of wrapping.
