series of failures, rendered portable by S. M. Caulfield
Shredded paper and white crochet, broken ceramic, glass storage jar.
10 x 12 cm
During the creation of my original idea, the mug that was meant to form the central piece was broken. Once I’d had a frustrated cry about it, it led me to think about how much experimentation leads to failure, and how rarely we go public with that aspect of ourselves. In the same vein as the Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, I crafted the piece from other broken ceramic and the remnants of previous personal relationships. I focused on items handmade for me by the givers, and it felt a correct cycle of regeneration to make them into a piece acknowledging the collapse of intimacy. I think in the release of this artwork into public and physical display, it reinterprets grief, rage and shame as artefacts.
(The piece can be displayed open and tipped onto its side, scattering the contents, or sealed.)
